Green Specifications

I started providing Green Specs services to bridge the gap between traditional architectural specs and green design. Interior designers generally write specifications for their interior projects, but leave the architectural issues to others. Yet a home is a system, a whole living unit, and healthful, environmentally responsible building projects start with the choices that begin from the ground up.

When I started doing green design, my focus was on interiors, whether a kitchen remodel or the design of new piece of furniture. Yet over time it became more and more difficult for me to draw a line between my professional domain as an interior designer and the decisions made about the actual building itself. Because I cared about all the different materials selected for my clients' projects, I began to educate myself, and then give advice on a wider range of green building issues. Nearly twenty years and dozens of green-spec projects later, I am still as concerned about the insulation in a client’s walls as I am about the carpet on their floor. And I now know as much about heating, ventilation and air filtration as about fabric and paint.

So, what are Green Specs?

I take building or remodeling plans and make recommendations or changes to the design, and the materials and products that have been specified by the builder or architect in order to reduce resources, energy and toxins created in the project.

As a LEED Accredited Professional through the US Green Building Council, and a Certified Building Professional through the National Association of Remodelers, I draw from national green building standards and guidelines when preparing these green specs.

Green Specs address everything from the project’s structural materials, to the most appropriate mechanical systems, to the finishes, flooring and furniture. These specs are written in the standard language and format that builders and architects use every day.

They provide clear, specific directions to help support the creation of a truly green building project. These green specifications also include where to purchase and order these greener products.

And finally, Green Specs provide recommendations for involving the entire building team to make the whole green building experience run more smoothly and be more successful.

Holistic Interiors

As an interior designer my obligation is to help clients create home and work spaces where we deeply enjoy happy and productive daily work, and have a refuge to give support and love to our family, friends and ourselves.

These are ways I help to create environments that support our bodies, our minds and our spirits:
• Creating environments that feed us through their order, simplicity, and beauty.

• Designing spaces that support all our daily activities.

• Interiors that help us stay connection with our natural environment throughout each day.

• Environments that enhance our total well-being: physically, emotionally and spiritually.

• Spaces that keep all our senses stimulated.

• Interiors that are easy to maintain, and last and look beautiful for years and years.

Speaking and Continuing Education

I have been speaking at conferences and events in the States and overseas for many years. I love to share the important messages of green design and building, and hopefully inspire others to jump in.

I offer Continuing Education courses accredited through the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and can create courses appropriate to nearly any audience, and at any level of their learning.
